Sensor Cleaning (n.) is the process of removing dust, fingerprints, or debris from a camera image sensor. On DSLRs and mirrorless cameras, the sensor is exposed when you change lenses – which is how dust gets in. On smartphones and action cameras, the sensor is sealed inside the body and is rarely exposed to contamination.
Why Dust on a Sensor Matters
A dust particle on a camera sensor shows up as a small dark spot in your images, most visible at small apertures (f/8 to f/11), on uniform surfaces like blue skies or white walls, and in the corners of frames. At large apertures like f/1.8, dust is usually invisible because the shallow depth of field throws it out of focus.
This is one of the reasons landscape photographers notice it more than portrait shooters. A shot of a clear sky at f/11 will show every dust mote clearly. The same sensor dust barely registers in a portrait shot at f/2 with a blurred background.
Smartphones – Does Sensor Cleaning Apply?
On a sealed smartphone camera, sensor dust is uncommon. The lens assembly is fused to the body and the sensor is not exposed during normal use. If you see dark spots that persist across all photos regardless of which lens you use, the issue is usually a scratch or contamination on the outer lens element – not the sensor itself. And unlike camera sensors, outer lens elements can be cleaned with a microfiber cloth without any risk to the image quality.
On action cameras like the GoPro Hero12 or DJI Action 4, the lens pod is removable and exchangeable. If you get dust inside the lens housing, the correct fix is to replace the lens pod rather than attempt to clean inside it. Attempting to disassemble an action camera housing usually results in a permanently fogged seal.
DSLR and Mirrorless Sensor Cleaning
Modern mirrorless cameras and DSLRs have built-in sensor cleaning modes that vibrate the sensor at high frequency to shake off loose dust. This handles about 80% of dust issues. Sony, Canon, and Nikon all include this feature and recommend running it periodically.
For stubborn contamination – a fingerprint on the sensor from a botched lens change, or liquid damage – manual cleaning with a sensor swab and cleaning solution may be necessary. This is the point where most photographers take the camera to a service center rather than risk damaging the sensor coating with improper technique.
If you own a mirrorless camera and change lenses frequently, develop the habit of pointing the camera body downward when the lens is off – this prevents dust from falling into the chamber. In dusty environments, change lenses quickly and have the replacement lens ready before you remove the old one.
Professional Cleaning vs. DIY
Sensor cleaning services at camera shops typically charge INR 500-1500 for a professional wet clean. It is worth doing once a year if you shoot regularly, or any time you see persistent spots after running the built-in cleaning cycle. The service center technicians have proper lighting, calibrated swabs, and experience that reduces the risk of sensor damage.
For mobile photographers who use only phones, sensor cleaning is essentially not a concern. Your main maintenance task is keeping the external lens glass clean – a microfiber cloth in your pocket solves 95% of image quality complaints attributed to “bad camera performance.”
